El Tepozteco

The Tepozteco (Spanish: El Tepozteco) is an Aztec Pyramid situated on top of the mountain overlooking the quaint town of Tepoztlan (about 1.5h drive from Mexico City). Tepozteco is located around 2,300 meters above the see level and almost 600 meters above the Tepoztlan valley.  The hike from the town up to the archeological site is filled with waterfalls (during the rainy season), dense rainforest canopy and interesting rock formations. And, if you are lucky, you can also meet on your way playful coatis. The pathway starts with a stone staircase then breaks into uneven stones and rocks all the way to the top. Nearing the top, you will come to a set of narrow iron staircases which cuts right through a thin rock canyon.

    A lot of climbing

    Reviewed 20 March 2018

It would be a much nicer hike, if there were not so many people around us. We went there on Sunday when the entrance is free and the place was literally flooded with visitors. But if you forget about the people, the hike overall is very interesting (a lot of rocks and stairs to climb on), most of the time it is shaded by the trees, and the view at the top is really amazing. The piramid itself is not spectacular but the overall experience is worth the physical effort. This is a personal opinion of a KiddieMundo user.

    Tips

    1. The hike is definitely not for the little kids as the rocks sometimes might be too much for the little feet to handle. 2. It's better to visit this place during the week or early on weekends when there are fewer visitors there. 3. Take with you some snacks and definitely a lot of water. 4. Wear comfortable shoes and don't forget a sunscreen protection and a hat. 5. There are no restrooms along the trail nor on the top, so make sure your child use a restroom before the hike.
